Our Judge Johnny Johnson
“My art is a response to many different life experiences, I am sensitive to the human condition which compels me to express through painting a particular opinion. I want the viewer to relate to it in his/her own way. Other times the creative process is as important as the work itself.”
Renowned artist Johnny P. Johnson was born in Henderson, North Carolina and has a BS Degree in Fine Arts Education from Virginia State University and a MFA from Howard University. He began teaching art in the Fredericksburg area in 1959 and taught in the Fredericksburg City Public schools for over 30 years. He was also an adjunct professor at both Germanna Community College and the University of Mary Washington. He has conducted workshops all over the United States. His exhibitions include showings in the Fredericksburg Center For the Creative Arts, Howard University, Washington, D.C.,Twentieth Century Gallery, Williamsburg, African American Gallery, Columbia, Maryland, Mt. Sterling Gallery, Kentucky One Man Exhibit, Frejus, France, French Rivera. Sidney E. King
In his book, Tribute to An Artist, the Jamestown Paintings of Sidney E. King, James Crutchfield writes “He (King) was a master with oils, acrylics and watercolors and a precision pen and ink artist. ”Never was King’s genius more apparent than this past year for Jamestown’s 400th Anniversary where his paintings originally unveiled to the national public fifty years before in 1957, were again the center of attention. Visitors from allover the world viewed the Jamestown, Sidney King collection now in the Colonial National Historic Park, Williamsburg and the APVA.
In an article for the Central Rappahannock Regional Library, Barbara Crookshanks says, “King was spectacular as muralist. He did the largest mural ever to be painted in the United States, 400 ft long by 75 feet wide. Entitled “Creation, it covers the dome of the Visitors center in Salt Lake City Utah.
Sidney E. King was born in Massachusetts in 1906 and studied under John Singer Sergeant in Boston. His studio there folded during the depression and he began to travel in a Model-T Ford, panting watercolors. He settled in the Fredericksburg area where he took work as a sign painter, camouflaged combat planes and drew ads and posters. He met and married Caroline native, Peggy Taylor, and they lived in her ancestral home, The Willows in southern Caroline. Here he built a studio near the house. After his career began to flourish, he painted nearly 200 historic murals for the National Park Service including the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Parks. He was known for his meticulous research, attention to detail and historical accuracy, Over the years he created much more than works of history. Residents of Caroline and beyond, cherish such subjects as land and seascapes, flowers, animals religious subjects and portraits. He painted prolifically for nearly 80 years, working Almost daily up until his death at the age of 95 in 2002.

With Special Appreciation Barbara A. Byrd
Bowling Green and Caroline County are proud to claim talented artist and native daughter, Barbara Byrd, whose work is becoming quite well known.
Her ongoing exhibits include “Everything Gardening” on Caroline Street in Fredericksburg and “Beautiful Floors” on Main Street in Bowling Green.
Over the past few years, Barbara has shown numerous places; The Fredericksburg Center For Creative Arts, Libertytown Arts Workshop, Central Rappahannock Regional Library, The Wounded Bookshop, The Heritage Fine Art Exhibit and The Keystone Coffee Shop.
A native of Caroline born in 1949, Barbara’s interest began when as a small child she painted by numbers. She then received formal training by renowned local artist, Sidney King. Her life long love of painting lead her to take lessons from the late Carol Campbell, Susan Stuller, Ed King, Johnny Johnson and His-Mei Yates. Barbara’s medium of choice is now watercolor where she feels her art becomes “alive”.
Her work includes Virginia scenes, marine life, flora, fauna and world travels. Now she hopes to teach and nurture others in expressing their life experience through color, light, shapes and memories.
