Yorkie needs to gain weight
      #750570 - 07/23/05 09:34 AM (71.240.230.42)

Hello. I have a male yorkie who is 19mths old. He is not at a good weight b/c I can feel the bumps in his spine when i pet him. I was feeding him Royal Canin, then he seemed to get bored with that. Now i'm feeding him science diet. The dry food(small bites). He doesn't start to eat that right away, but eventually he will go ahead and eat it. I have sometimes mixed can food in with the dry food, and he'll eat it a little better, but I still have not seen weight gain. I took him for the worm test back in March. It came back negative. Does anyone have any idea of what I can do? I want to take him to the Vet, but I have no money right now? Does anyone know of any Vets that may do payment plans or something like that?

I was in a similar bind with my puppy (and my wallet) a few months ago. My vet suggested I feed her rice. It's cheap and will help your dog gain weight. Works like a charm, and they love it.

Did the vet say the dog was underweight. Most people think that when a dog looks like its the right weight, it is actually overweight.

My puppy was underweight, and had actually lost a few pounds.

When was your dog's last vet visit? When was the last stool check? My puppy started to not gain weight and when his stool was checked they found hook worms. If you've had a recent enough exam your vet might be willing to just do a stool check without the office visit.

How much does he weigh? They only get to about 7 pounds. Check the content of the food, maybe you need more fat or something. Our lab is still a puppy (5.5 months) and he eats Purina Puppy Chow twice a day...3 cups each time. He's just over 50 pounds on his way to 80 or so.

I was having the same problem with my Pomeranian. He was eating but still on the thin side. Like your dog, I could feel his spine and hip bones.
The vet said that I needed to find a high protein dog food. The best brand I found thus far is Nutro Natural Choice High Energy Formula. Most brands have about 20-26% protein while the High Energy Formula has 30%. I also mix a little canned food with the dry about 2-3 times a week. For canned food, he seems to like the Top Dog Prime Choice the best. Once I started using the High Energy Formula w/ the Top Choice, he's gone from 9.6 pounds to almost 12 and is maintaining that weight nicely.

An idea that might help your Yorkies appetite.
You can make dinner time fun.
We purchased one of those toy balls that you can put kibble inside. The smell of the kibble peaks their curiosity and when they nose the ball, a piece of kibble drops out. It's even better if you have two dogs chasing the same ball. They act like little kids competing over who will get the treat first.

He last had his stool checked in...I think it was the end of Feb. - the beginning of March. His stool sample came back negative for worms. I'm gonna be broke as crap, but my dog means a lot to me. I made him an appointment today to have the fecal test done again, and to have the heart worm test. He's overdue for the heartworm test. But I was giving him the medicine every month. I think I missed a couple of months like 3-4, so i'm gonna have that done so that they will let me purchase heart worm medicine. I've been in VA for 1.5 yrs now, and I just found this vet Chancellor Veterinary clinic(that's where i took him in March 05 for the first time). I'm gonna take him back there. I tried the rice thing to day. He ate a little bit. I took him out to the bathroom just now, and he had a solid poop. As far as weight. He weighed 9lbs when I took him in March. The vet told me that he supposed to weigh more, because he's already taller than the standard. So......I'm gonna try those other feeding suggestions. Thanks you guys. I'm gonna keep you posted on the test results. Hopefully this is something curable, b/c I love my dog soooooo much, and want him to live for a very long time.

The surest wa I've been able to get my dogs to eat is to mix their dry food with moist cat food. Usually all it takes is pouring the gravy that is in the can in the ground varieties onto the dry food and they finish the whole bowl.

The cheapest vet I know of in town is on Princess Anne, but they're just not very friendly and personable as the other vets around town. I usually take my dogs there for shots, as it's usually only about $50 for two dogs compared to about $250 or so for the pair at a normal vet, but for checkups and problems I always take them to colonial on rt1. But if you just need a quick, cheap checkup try giving princess anne animal clinic a call. It's right up there by carl's ice cream.

Okay. Well I took him to Chancellor. He had his fecal check, and heartworm test. Both were negative. So he doesn't have worms. Thank goodness. I'm happy about that. I'm trying this sauce made by Iams. I got it from Giant, which was on sale. I got the bacon flavor and added it to his dry food. He seemed to go ahead and eat atleast half of his food. I give him the whole 1 cup at a time. He weighed 9.8lbs at the vet. The lady said that he doesn't look terribly skinny, but he does look thin for his size. She said that he weighs exactly the same as when i brought him back in March. So he hasn't lost any weight, and he hasn't gained any. I'm gonna take some of the comments that everyone has left and see how that will work. I've started with the rice. I just mixed some with his dry food, and that sauce. He seems to eat it. Thanks guys for the advice.

Try not to change his diet too quickly. Dogs, especially little ones, have delicate systems. Gradually add a little rice at each meal. My lil fella likes the Iams gravy too.

Voice of Experience says don't add too much rice at once, unless you want to clean up runny puppy poop for a few days.

i'm mixing his dry food with ceasar moist food. He eats that right up, but i just see a little visual change. I'm taking him to get neutered tomorrow at the spay/neuter clinic. I'm really nervous b/c i don't want anything to happen to my dog. I pray that he will be okay.

How did the neutering go? Well, I hope.

well, we just got back not too long ago. He seems to be tired, and just lays down, looking drowsy. But he still growls, and wants to bark at strange noises. So I know the old Maestro is there. He just seems to be recouperating. I am overjoyed to have him back, and I can't wait until he's all back to normal.

Feed/Water him in small amounts at first.... he may be a still a little nauseated until the drugs wear off...

Ok I am getting into this on the late side. I have three yorkies and all of them are different. I have one that is 12 pound and I have two that are under 5 pounds. The over wieght one was eating the same food that I had to put out for a German Shepard that was active 24/7. We recently lost Draco and the high performance food that was given to him is no longer in our home. Jessie, my 12 pound Yourkie no longer has access to that food and is loosing weight. Ok now for the part you may be interested in. I have two other Yorkies that are 9 months old. Neither has been nuetured yet but bothe will be in two months. Doc is going in on Monday. I have been feeding them both "Cesar" Select dinners. Doc is the same body type that you say your dog is. He is skinny and I can feel all of his bones. The thing is he is not even close to the weight you say your dog is. Is is about 3 pounds at 9 months of age. As long as your dog shows no sign of hipoglycimia he will be fine. Check with the vet and as long as he does not have low blood sugar his body should be acting like it should. I can feel the spine of my dog and he eats twice a day and has dry dog food out 24/7. He is what he is. SKINNY. Wish I was.

I hear you nasmill2. Well my dog seems to have come out of the neutering fine. He's back to playing and being his old self. One thing that i've noticed is that he hasn't done that nervous peeing. My son't grandad was over and my dog was excited, but he didn't pee. He usually pees a little when he get's overly excited over new guests. I am not mixing dry science diet with the ceasar varieties lately. He looks to be gaining weight. When I took him to get neutered I think he was 10lbs. So at least he broke the 10 mark. Now that he has been neutered, which i can tell is a difference for him, he is eating all of his food at once. I give him 1 cup of dry food mixed with one ceasar dinner daily. He seems to love eat, and won't eat the dry food alone as easily as mixed. Thanks for the suggestions on everything.

PLEASE keep him current on his heartworm medicine!!!! This is not hard to do - skipping '3-4 months' is NOT acceptable if you love your dog.

I love him, but I had to get enough money to take him to the vet. The vet won't give you the meds if you don't have the test first, so I was strapped for $ :(.

Keeping him alive should be a priority. It can be dangerous and painful for dogs who are not treated regularly.
