Rappahannock River Curse Strikes Again
      #737299 - 07/04/05 05:29 PM (24.250.108.63)

There was a drowning today in the Rappahannock between Fall Hill Avenue and the Falmouth Bridge. I don't have any details but I heard up to three Hispanics were claimed. I saw one bag brought up to the van but there may have been more than one body inside. It was so sad to see the family waiting at the street for the medical examiner's arrival. I'm sure details will be in tomorrow's paper.

Please let this serve as a reminder that the Rappahannock is a dangerous river, claiming lives each year! While heading home, I saw multitudes of people in the water below the Falmouth bridge who, I'm sure, had no clue of what had transpired upstream! Families were wading and swimming and others were eating watermelon on the rocks in the middle of the river. With the undertow, underwater debris, rocks and holes, it's just not safe to use as a swimming hole!

How many lives will it take before people realize that this river is to be respected?

What I don't understand is if the river is so dangerous and lives are lost each year, why don't the affected localities make it illegal to swim.

And anybody in a boat or canoe must wear a life jacket or receive a ticket and fine.

I believe that some of the areas have signs against swimming posted in both English and Spanish but that assumes that everyone can read. I'm not being nasty but there are many immigrants who have never learned to read in any language. There are miles of shoreline and many access points to the river, therefore not every area could be posted with signs.

I don't think it is considered legal to be in the river without flotation gear but how can it really be enforced? If you had seen the sheer number of people just east of the Falmouth bridge today, you'd see just how difficult it would be.

And there are always fishermen and canoes and kayaks in the river - I never would have thought it dangerous. Seems a big rocky for my tastes, but it looks innocent enough.

That's my point. The river appears quite tame yet over 70 people have drowned in it since 1962!

There were several articles about its danger in the FLS last year. Quoting from one from 5/25/04: "It's a warm, sunny day--perfect for fishing, having a few beers and wading in the river to cool off.

Problem is, the Rappahannock River bottom is pockmarked with unseen holes. Wade knee deep and suddenly you can find yourself thrashing around underwater, gasping for air.

And even for good swimmers, there are unpredictable currents and submerged rocks.

Signs along the river in and near Fredericksburg warn visitors of the dangers in both English and Spanish.

But every year, the death toll mounts."

There were four drownings in 2001 and two last year. This isn't to mention the rescues where the victims were lucky enough to tell the tale later. 16 teens on a canoe trip from a camp upriver were rescued on the 4th of July in 2003 when their canoes tipped in swollen waters near the Falmouth Bridge. My parents live in that area and they are witnesses to numerous rescues each year! Needless to say, they aren't thrilled when I tell them I'm going canoeing or fishing on the river, even though I wear a vest every time.

I'm not saying that the river is something to be feared but it definitely demands respect!

Edited to add a line or two.

What people don't realize is that a person can be swept away by 2-6 inches of moving water and that you can drown in less than a tablespoon of water.

I used to teach first aid/CPR/lifeguarding for the Red Cross and people were always shocked to learn how little it takes to sweep you off your feet, into a river, and kill you.

most can't imagine the force in a smll hydraulic or hole. had a friend who went in one. hes a burly weight lifter and he came out dove back in twice. he said he felt another bod in there. he realized after that he was being so twisted and pummeled ven in this small hole that the "other" leg he felt in there was his own.theres a spot below chain bridge right near shore behind a bridge piling that if you thro an adult empty life jacket in this apparently smooth water wikll move it slowly up stream to piling then suck it under. we take rookies there and tell em to take deep breath and hold it when it goes under. it comes back up after a while but almost no one has held their breath that long. we want em to pay attention to instructions there and this method generates a great deal of inspired focus and obediance. plus a few guys bailing out on trip

Its so sad. I believe it was just one person, a 26 year old Hispanic male. I heard it on my scanner earlier today. Water is very deceptive, especially rivers like the Rappahannock. Swimming in any area that is unsupervised by a trained lifeguard is very dangerous.

I was at Colonial Beach yesterday and I could hardly relax, b/c I was so worried about the kids out in it. People were doing back flips and swan dives off of the old pier stumps.

The river here is no different then any other body of water. Being on the water, whatever and where ever - deserves respect - and by respect I mean sobriety - is required. The Rapp is no different then any other point of water recreation. It is in our thoughts because it is in our backyard, but make no mistake: anytime you are on or around the water you must be on your guard. This is especially true when children or drunk adults are involved.

This concludes my PSA.

exactly. Back when I was young and stupid in high school, some friends and I thought it would be fun to tie 6 innertubes together and float down the river.

The rope holding the tubes together got snagged on a rock and flipped us all. Even though I was only in about 2 feet of water, I had a hard time getting up. It scared me enough that I don't swim in that river at all anymore.

The Rap. River is deadly. My sympathies go out to the families.

NEWS FLASH!!! People can drown in water. Not sure if everybody knew that but its true. Close all bodys of water immediatly. If anyone is caught swimming they should be arrested.

P.S. There are sharks in the ocean so I think we should close all beaches first, then rivers and lakes.

my grandfather drowned in the rappahannock back in 85...of course, before he drowned in the river, he drowned himself in a few bottles of scotch...I'm not sure how many inches that equals.

I dunno...I was told once to go drown myself in a shotglass of warm piss.....could be the same theory.

Techinally to drown is to take water into the lungs so I guess in theory you could if you didn't have the cough mechanism....

You know the river doesn't doesn't play the race card. It doesn't matter what one's ethnicity is. Truth is I'd be a little concerned in that particular area too not just because of some sharp drop off or the rocks or some unseen hydraulic but right in that area is also the fall line for the river where it transitions from from fresh water to salt water. Stafford County has the jurisdiction of the river right up to the F'Burg shore. Is it a likelyhood that that Stafford would post lifeguards? Probably not. A pool is an enclosed area but the river is not. You just can't emphasize enough the safety issues of the matter.

Rivers of any size can be extremely dangerous due to not only currents but rocks on the bottem. If your foot becomes trapped under or between rocks as you are floating along you can get into some serious trouble. That is why if for some reason you find yourself in a river situation you are not able to control you should keep your feet up and your legs close together until the current pushes you closer to the shore.
