NEW YORK (Reuters) - Comedian Whoopi Goldberg (news) will no longer appear in ads for diet aid maker Slim-Fast following her lewd riff on President Bush (news - web sites)'s name at a fund-raiser last week, the company said on Wednesday.
Florida-based Slim-Fast said it was "disappointed" in Goldberg's remarks at last Thursday's $7.5 million star-studded fund-raiser at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
"Ads featuring Ms. Goldberg will no longer be on the air," Slim-Fast General Manager Terry Olson said in a statement, adding that the company regrets that Goldberg's remarks offended some customers.
Republicans have expressed outrage over the fund-raiser for presumptive Democratic nominee John F. Kerry and his vice presidential running mate, John Edwards (news - web sites), in which entertainers lined up to skewer the president.
The New York Post said of Goldberg's appearance at the event: "Waving a bottle of wine, she fired off a stream of vulgar sexual wordplays on Bush's name in a riff about female genitalia."

Go ahead and keep believing that, X. Your faith in the goodness and fairness of Republicans is honorable.
Unfortunately, we at Americans Dedicated to Helping Democracy (ADHD) have noticed an increased persecution of those that yell "The Emporer has no clothes on!" For the first time in history our White House is manned with an administration lacking all humor and wit, and unable to accept criticism or admit errors.

It's actually not censorship. It's a private company that's bowing under pressure from conservative organizations, the Christian Right, etc.. who all organize these call-in threats of boycot. Now, though, a Liberal talkshow has been airing the number of Slim-Fast, and calling for a counter boycot....and...since I researched and found that the Slim-Fast owner is actually a big campaign donor to the DNC, I'd guess that this issue will be resolved. I heard Whoopi herself say it was worth it, because "How long will it be before there's another president with a name that will get me as much laughs?"
On the other hand, I have been called un-American, and not just on here, but in person....mostly by ignorant people who rant slogans and don't listen to reason. I have been discriminated against for not being a Christian, although I still believe that religion has no place in the workplace. (but what can you do when your Boss is also a preacher in his church...) I never voiced opposition to the church at work, but I also never openly supported the church. I never bitched about being "lead in prayer" at work, but people noticed I never said "amen" either.
On the other hand, a former work colleague who was very pro-Bush listened to some of my worries about the Patriot Act, read it, and did some research, and is now totally against it.
So, like the old commercial; I tell two friends, and they tell two friends, and so on, and so on....

No conspiracy, it's a fact. Every company in America is falling all over themselves trying to be patriotic in light of the current political climate. Since Janet Jackson's boob, censorship has only gotten worse. The threat of some rightwing nutjobs (of course I don't include you in that ) who have nothing better to do than start a boycott has kept alot of corporations jumpy and quick to pull the plug regardless of free speech issues. For example:
Reaganites jump all over CBS for daring to speak ill of our beloved President and the show gets moved to Showtime.
O'Reilly paints a target on Ludicris and Pepsi drops him like a bad habit.
The French don't back our decision on Iraq, so people start boycotting French food, wine and French fries (freedom fries, how asinine!!!).
Don't tell me that there aren't humorless, free speech-squashing Bushies out there who weren't already firing off emails proclaiming that they were longterm Slim Fast users but were now going to stay fat rather than touch a Slim Fast shake again!

Mfloyd I am disappointed. I expect this from clarks army, but not from you.
Neither of you have any real business experience do you?
Ya, slim fast was under pressure to remove Whoopi, it was tremendous pressure too I am sure. But I highly doubt any of it came from the white house. It was pressure from the people who ultimately keep slimfast going, incase you still haven’t figured it out, it was the consumers. Republicans, like it or not, make up a rather large part of slim fasts customer base. So do mothers, and other people who may have been offended by her comments which where way over the top. The main goal of sponsoring someone to perform in commercials for a company is to raise company image and thus help promote the product so it sells faster. So if you have a spokesperson that no longer raises company image, and in fact causes people to boycott your product, then you pull your sponsorship of that spokesperson. It is simple business, slim fast is out to make as much money as possible, that is their goal (even though they say it is to make you thin). There is nothing sinister here, it is business as usual. Whoopi brought it all down on herself by making those comments that she really should not have made. By pulling a counter boycott you are now making the execs at slimfast wish they never heard of whoopi.
But hey, if you want to keep on living in fantasy land, don’t let me stop you. I did think you where a tad smarter than this though mfloyd.

Thanks for the lecture, dh, but I'm not so stupid that I need you to explain how the threat of a boycott works. My point was that there is a mob mentality in our consumerism these days, and it is directed at the wrong things.
People's priorities are completely screwed up that Ludicris gets fired for singing about things that upset O'Reilly listeners, but Pepsi hires Britney Spears to run around half naked on TV at any hour of the day.
I can even go farther and suggest that while there are many Conservatives who are ready to boycott for the simplist perceived slight or moral offense, not enough people (on the Left of Right) are willing to hold a corporation accountable for their business practices.
A company's spokesman says something about the President, everyone is up in arms. A company routinely hires illegal immigrants to work for cheap labor, no one cares.

Republicans = SlimFast slogging lard butts.
Democrats = the other thing.
So I would expect SlimFast will make sure it picks a republican for it’s next spokes person. I nominate Drew Carey.

A nice try clarks army, but your point was to put another jab in at the conservatives. Here are some of your remarks to help refresh your memory.

Funny thing is that is almost everything you said before I posted.
And you are still at trying to drive your real point home, here is proof from your own words.
Quote:

Guess democrats aren’t known to boycott anything in your world. Or then, now that I think about it, perhaps democrat boycotts would be better classified as violent protests.
Currently not to many people care that Brittany is drinking a pepsi half naked on TV, in case you haven’t noticed this countries moral standards have gotten, forgive the pun, loose. But I would say at least 30% of this country is republican, and slim fast can’t afford to lose that 30% of its customer base. Whoopi brought this on herself, as a spokesperson for a company she should have known better.

I am sorry paul I did not realize that you where never taught simple math, or else I would have made myself clearer.
You see Paul, “a rather large part” can be any number from say 15% to 100%.
Now had I said “more than half”, or “most”, which would have been 51% to 100%, if I had said “at least half” which is 50% to 100%, or if I had said “more than any other group”, then you could say that “Republicans = SlimFast slogging lard butts”.
But since I did not say any of those things, you just cast another vote for democrats = not well educated.
Oh, and after reading your posts here and in other threads, I thought it only kind to tell you that you should change the picture in your signature. The irony of it is just too great.

Funny that you don't quote the rest of that statement, is it because it undermines whatever point that you were trying to make?: Quote:
(on the Left of Right) are willing to hold a corporation accountable for their business practices.
A company's spokesman says something about the President, everyone is up in arms. A company routinely hires illegal immigrants to work for cheap labor, no one cares.
Even TMH agreed with that statement, I guess that is why you chose to ignore it.
I do think that many (notice that doesn't say all) Conservatives nowadays have a mob mentality, especially the Religious Right, and that corporations have bent over backwards and trampled on 1st Amendment rights to appease that mob.
Now if you are trying to insinuate that I don't think people on the Left boycott, you're way off, and I'd like you to quote where I said it. However, I don't see large groups of Liberals running around calling for boycotts for businesses that support the President. How do you support an energy company? How many calls for a boycott of Wachovia have you seen? Where's the Liberal boycott of Enterprise?
Instead of trying so hard to cut and paste my posts to prove your point, how about you go back through and read them to understand mine.

Stern wasn't dropped by Bush's cronies, Clear Channel? Oh wait, he was...
Apparently O'Reilly listeners haven't gone after Bud yet..
Yep, there's no backlash against Hollywood for speaking against Bush. Ask Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, weren't they disinvited from Cooperstown by another Bush crony for the anniversary of Bull Durham? Isn't it interesting that Sean Penn gets fired from a movie and O'Reilly listeners are calling for a boycott of his films? (I'd have to check the timeline on those two things, I don't want to be accused of pulling a Michael Moore)
Come on, JLowe, don't tell me that there is no Conservative backlash. I've given you 3 different examples twice! Just for fun, why don't you put in O'Reilly + boycott in a google search, and see what you get back- Canada, the Expos (can't tell if that one is true), Pepsi, Sean Penn, France- it's a riot...
