Fairview Beach
      #1268719 - 03/14/08 10:34 PM (72.236.206.179)

Is Fairview Beach in Westmoreland County? I have no idea but we use to go there too. I just remember it's somewhere outside of Fredericksburg.

I wonder if it's even still open. They use to have bands on weekends.

Fairview Beach is in King George, right off Route 218. It's also a great small tightknit community. Tim's II Restaurant is there. It's a favorite of boaters, they have a pontoon shuffle boat that'll come get you from your boat and take you to the restaurant and back. It can get a bit rough on weekends, but they have bands and karioke. Tim's has a 'not on the 4th of July' fireworks show that attracts hundreds of boats every year. Last year they had a "boat-palooza" that brought about 1,000 people, it was a day long event with lots of bands, crabs and beer!
There is another restaurant called the Pirates Den, they're located at the Fairview Marina, also have bands.
I know they were trying to get golf carts approved, but I'm not sure where that wound up.

fairview beach-- yes, you can now drive golf carts there. the event was called aquapalooza and attracted over 10,000 boaters, two bars, both decent for what they are. if you like river people, fairview is the plae for you. it's a funny little community that is kind of delusional about their "beachside" community. kitschy, but fun in the summer. i think there is another restaurant there now, near the fire hall, called the paisley dog.
the water is considered "off limits" afew times each season, as algae blooms force mandatory restrictions.

I'm sure I'm quite a bit older than you, but Fairview Beach was a favorite hangout to go dance. Before hubby and I got married we loved going there to dance. We met at a dance quite a few years ago and been dancing ever since lol

I don't know about that older part, I just had my second granddaughter three weeks ago! I'm geezing for sure.
I'm not originally from this area, we moved to KG 10 years ago and CB two years ago. Before that, Alexandria and for my childhood, upstate NY.
I, too, love to dance, but my hubby doesn't. He either goes along and hangs out or I go with my friends.
And, thanks for setting my "facts" straight, happy hooker. It was a huge event at Tim's last year.
I've heard they've identified the problem with the water contamination, it was a sewer pipe from the trailer community next to Tim's. That's wasn't the whole problem, you still can get the algae blooms.
I think Potomac River commuinities consider themselves beach communities because so much of the flavor of the place centers on the water, boating, fishing, jet skis, etc. It's not the OBX, but still water-oriented.

I had some wild times there.
They had a dj and picnic tables and straw walls and that was about it....

Absolutely, back in the day, Fairview was the home base for one of the area's most famous bands, The Diplomats.

yep do wop it was and more, a major horn section, Motown, and a little Procal Harem thrown in as the keyboard player was well before his time, classic rock and the whole nine yards, members of the group still play in various area bands, will be reunited again in Bowling Green at Town Hall which was another homebase for the group for the second year in a row again in October for a trip down memory lane. I will keep yall posted. This is a Chamber of Commerce event and the tickets are kind of steep but well worth it.

Fairfiew was a favorite motorcycle destination to go to the pier. Because of the parking and the concerns about water quality we didn't do much eles there.

fairview is whatever. i grew up on that beach, in that water, and i have no lasting side effects. i admit now i think twice before jumping off the boat, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. i never was the type to be scared of a little filth.
i lived at fairview for a while, and have to admit that the politics of the little community there were absolutely infuriating, but such is life. gossipy, evil women will be gossipy evil women no matter where you are, i suppose.
i miss dances there from when i was a kid. this was long aftert he dancehall days, though. these dances used to be at the old firehouse, and they were always fun. usually a live band playing oldies, us kids would dance and dance and then beg to sleep on the beach. special and amazing were the nights our parents said yes.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, all.
Fairview Beach is actually in King George. I don't recall seeing a pier there. Maybe you're thinking of Colonial Beach.
I enjoy people posting about the history of the place, not knowing a lot of it myself. It kind of makes a chain for me, a better perspective on things.

i have been talking to my mom alot lately about her childhood here in KG (she moved up north and met my father, had a family and we moved back), and she tells some wild stories about fairview back in the day. patsy cline and all those musicians were regular fixtures at the dancehall and the peir when my grandmother was young. my mom is digging up some old pictures for me.

Oh yes indeed they had a pier. The dance hall was out on the pier where they could sell mixed drinks. Fairview Beach was on the Virginia side and the pier was in Maryland. In those days Virginia did not have whiskey by the drink. Can ya believe that lol

I think it was around year 1971 that whiskey by the drink was voted in in Virginia and it passed. Not sure of the definite year but it's close.

Gosh you are bringing back good memories with the mention of the "Diplomats". They were the band in demand.

Another band was "Robert Williams and the Groovers". Does anyone remember the Groovers? They played at both of my Proms. The Groovers use to play all around Fredericksburg area too and up further North.

Quite a few times I saw the woman who ran the place drag some drunk out of there.
She'd watch and when their head would hit the table she'd grab-em from behind and drag-em outside.
One time I saw her grab some guy who wasn't as out of it as she thought and he decked her.
The usual melee ensued.

Sounds like a few nights I've witnessed on FT...
But seriously, I've only seen one bar fight, it was Superbowl Sunday and I was in a bar in Alexandria having a good old time. Everything was fine, then the next thing I know everyone in the bar was fighting, fists were flying, people were yelling, drinks were splashing everywhere. It was wild...
We managed to get out of there by hugging the bar and heading to the door. I was scared and laughing at the same time.

Growing up in Essex, we spent time in CB and Fairview in the late 60's early 70's.. Burg, I remember the haybales at Fairview., and I also remember the great bands. One night at Fairview, I was ready to go(1 am...ish)and the folks with me were not. I was a bit nervous to walk to my car by myself and a really nice biker guy walked me to my car. I was very glad to get in my 1961 VW Bug and go home.

I never went to the place on the pier.
The place I was talking about was found by driving all the way down the road off 218 and it was on the left.
I was always surprised those hay bales didn't catch fire with all the smoking going on.
A lot of times we'd have to wait outside because there were too many people inside.
Junie, I, uh, can't help but wonder if one night, we, uhhhh, you know, er, umm......

Okay the dances on the Fairview Beach pier I am talking about was in the late sixties "1968".

Seems like in the sixties there were always dances around to go to like at the Fredericksburg Armory and over at the Louisa Fire Station and somewhere up at Mineral. Of course there was the Partlow Ruritan and good old Campbell's Country Club.

You guys are too young to remember some of these I guess.

Sorry, a tad before my time.
One sort of landmark I used to always look for when going to Fairview Beach was as you enter and begin going down the hill, on the edge of the woods at the top on the left, in the underbrush was the body of a Bentley sitting there, rusting away.

alright, so, i am sitting here reading this and simultaneaously talking with my mother about fairview beach, and her memories. hers center around the late fifties and early sixties, before she went off to college, but she talks fondly of a roller rink, a bath house, the outdoor dance pavillion-- its funny to think that fairview was a hotspot back in the day. i know that supposedly patsy cline, jimmy dean and other old-timey famous folks hung out there.

OK ~~~ Fairview Beach did have a pier in the early 50's. Beer & liquor was sold by the drink; and due to legal things, the Potomac River is property of Maryland; so that had to be brought in by boat, as you could not truck it thru VA ( you had to get it from a VA liquor store).

It did also have Slot Machines, which was a big attraction. Plus a Roller skating rink and Open air dance floor with a JUKE box.

There was lots of Army & Navy surpluses there too (people; tubes or floats; and buildings). The talk was that even during the big WAR, a German sub came up the river past there, almost to DC.

Spring had one REALLY Low tide, when all the residents when out in the riverbed to cleanup the previous years mess.

Back then it was run by Paul & Edith Jones and had good food and big crowds on Saturdays & Sunday. The river was not in as bad shape sounds now, but a good time was had by all......

That's really interesting, RiverRat.
I wonder if the Nazi sub story came from the U-Boat that is sunk in the Potomac.
As I recall, it is down vaguely in the Tall Timbers - Coles Point area, out in the middle, in about 60 or 70 feet of water.

I think it was brought here after the war so we could study some acoustic-absorbent coating on the hull. When they were done with it, they sunk it.

happyhooker,
Your Mom is right, although some of it is a "tad" before my time lol but not all. The roller rink she remembers was used for skating till about 1962 I think I'm right on the year. The skating rink was turned into a teen dance hall which was right next to the dance hall out on the pier for persons over 18. I was under 18 when I went there and did dance in what was the once roller rink, however every chance we got we figured out a way to go over to the pier dance hall. Girls 16 & 17 could pass for 18 and we did sometimes but most the time it could be you were dating an older guy at the time.

I heard during peak summertime they did have dances on the outdoor pavillion, but I never attended those. We did have other places to go too.

Yes Fairview Beach was a hotspot in the 1960's.
As a Caroline teen we went there often on Saturday nights because it was a good place to meeting boys from KG, Spotsylvania HS and old James Monroe HS.

Now as for Patsy Cline, Jimmy Dean - they must have been there in the late 50's or prior to 1965 because when I went all they had was local bands and no celebrity singers or that could have started up when I stopped going there around 1968. It was more a singles place.
