So Dresden loves, loves, loves to bite. He lives his whole life for biting things - Bits, toys, me, shoes, socks, you name it. He's worse than a toddler
Anyway, any suggestion on how to keep him from biting people? He is getting better, but still wants to bite hello rather than sitting calmly. He has all sorts of chew toys, we try not to play tug-of-war so he doesn't get the idea that biting's fun, and we're working on teaching him "Say Hello" where someone gives him a treat every time he sits calmly rather than jumping.
I've also told him over and over that no one loves a bitey boy, but he usually just bites me when I say that
My HD drive crashed last week and I haven't recovered my pictures yet :( I have to take some new ones, as the Bitey Boy is getting big!

Bite him back harder than he bit you. Or, spray everything and everyone that he comes into contact with bitter apple spray.

LOL - I have thought of the old toddler method of having him bite a bar of soap, but with my luck, he'll eat it and enjoy it!
He is an awful cutie though, and other than the biting, is a very good boy. He stays in the crate most of the day without complaint, is almost fully housebroken, and has only chewed up two pairs of shoes so far

Perhaps an aluminum one - he'd eat a wooden one

This is it, I used to train pointers. Just nip his ear, and stare him down. It would reinforce the counterbite if you would piss on him after, but that has slipped due to pc. If he jumps up on you with his forefeet, gently step on his hind toes, he'll stop. It helps if you have a 2 year old. He'll bite him for nothing. edit 4 spell

My eldest Sheepie just turned 4 in March and she still bites when she gets overstimulated (e.g., excited from playing - figured I'd better explain as I don't want anyone to think I'm stimulating my dogs in any other way! ). She only came to me a bit over a year ago, so her original owners are the ones that failed her. She's now 80+ lbs. and the biting, although playful, hurts like hell!
It's harder to train them out of it when they're older, Minx, so "nip it" now!!
BTW - the cutest thing now is this sheepie playing tug-of-war with my newest pup, a 10 lb. Westie! So damn cute!

Yeah, if Dresi gets excited, he bites more - we've been trying to wear him out before petting him a lot so he gets the message that when he's calm he gets pets and treats.
Hadn't thought of biting him back - think I have the younger spawn do that

Damn dog ate my workout shoes last night. Thought I had the bedroom door shut, but it must have been ajar - Dresi ate a pair of sandals and my workout shoes.
On the one hand, he's biting us less and less. OTOH, he's becoming quite an expensive dog between the shoes and rawhide bones! Never a dull moment when he's around - I'd get a bat, but I bet he'd eat that too!

Time to wear his ass out. Tie him to a treadmill and set that sucker at 15mph for a good half hour.

Does he fetch stuff? Got a set of stairs in the place? That stuff will knock him out even quicker.

Is he (she) still a puppy? Most dogs outgrow chewing stuff and digging by 1 year or 18 months, but like people, some never do. If it's just your stuff he chews, it's a personal thing, and you just need to be the alpha. We used to break retrievers from chewing birds on the retrieve ( we call it hard mouthing) by either slipping a rubber band with thumbtacks pointed out on the occasional bird), or substituting a rock hard frozen bird for an occasional surprise. Either one worked, and is not cruel, as the feathers probably were worse for the dog than the surprise. Training is done in the first year, after that they start training you. Nowadays, they probably make the dog watch videos. What you need to do is show the dog the error of his ways. It works with husbands, right? Good luck.

The dog is sly and has moved on from shoes to collars on his friend and co-hort - I've locked up every shoe I can find to keep his little teeth off of them!
And yes, he is definitely still a puppy! Me thinks he'll outgrow this phase in 2-3 years

Another thing to try is gently pinch his gums when you are taking the contraband from him. Just a little pinch, and it shows displeasure, and he might respond. I know it's something you wouldn't normally do, but dogs really want to please you, you may be sending the wrong signal unknowingly.

Good idea there - I've taught him 'drop', so he'll usually drop the contraband, but didn't think of sending him a second disapproval signal. Thanks!

MF. Sorry it falls to me. It's the same thing your wife does when she thumps lil mike when you're pestering her. I know, she says she says there was a bug on it. Think about it, why does she see a bug just after you've listened to that Buffet song? Come on, there's never a bug when she wants you to take her shopping. Sometimes I think wimmen' are smarter than we know, that's all I'm sayin'.
