heck no, same as my hometown. It's come a little way but it's still as closed minded, redneck & backwoods as ever.

Sure it is! There are people from all over the world here in Fred City, and they all bring something different. It's up to each individual if they want to embrace the diversity.

If you mean population diversity, then where I teach it is highly diverse. I am lucky enough to have students from: Pakistan, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Mexico, India, Afghanistan, Colombia, Indonesia, and many other places. Multicultural night at our school is awesome! Many of students from Africa or Asia are also familiar with Europe so that adds to the fun. The majority in my school are non-white, non-native to the U.S. I have learned so much in the past few years. In Stafford, not so much, but will be....PW County is not very welcoming to immigrant populations... A kid in my class today said: my dad ran for office in PW, he is famous for being against immigrants.
My tongue is still bleeding from that bite down.

I don't necessarily think Prince William is "against immigrants". They are against fully supporting and giving a free ride to immigrants.

I think the USA is the most diverse country in the world.
If you don't like the diversity now wait till the Chinese have their way. Move to China if you don't like the USA and all the rights and opportunity many have died to provide you with. Is it Utopia no, but it's a better than any other country in this world. Quit trying to divide and destroy this nation.

Exactly how many other countries have you lived in?
Exactly who in this thread is trying to divide and destroy this nation???
Exactly what customs are you referring to?

One need only look around to see lots of cultural diversity in the area. It cannot be an opinion question. It is a fact. Now, whether a poll responder views this as a positive or negative thing, THAT would be the worm ..can ...opener...poll.

You and Soldat make great comments on the article..Birds of a feather flock together..Why ???
I went to a small private MALE college in Central Va... Back when they were de-sexing the same sex schools- the Government threatened to take away all federal funding if they don't comply....Well H-SC met, took note, and told Uncle Sam to F-OFF and keep his big f'n nose out of their business and they cut off all Federal Funding right then and there.. See..they H-SC has been an all male school since 1776 and had built it's traditions on this..There were plenty of all girl schools so not a big deal.. So..today, H-SC is one of only two all male colleges in the US surviving off of 100% private funding... Next... VMI was told it had to allow women.. They fought it as long as possible but had to end its years of TRADITION, LOWER THEIR MILITARY STANDARDS and admit women.... My mother cut out an article from the Lexington Gazzette..I believe written by a descendant of Stonewall Jackson that said something like this...Since the beginning of the college, every time the US has called upon VMI for support and leadership we have always answered with our students and our lives. Now the one time VMI is asking the US for assistance, the US is failing us.
I agree with diversity, but not FORCED DIVERSITY... I may be old fashioned, but that is who I am....

for the most part those shouting the loudest live in the most mono color hoods. i remember the irony of judge green ordering busing to achieve racial integration and sending his kids to private school. i laughed when the obama pretended to consider dc public schools for his kids. that was a hoot and they tried to pretend it was serious

The Fredericksburg region is actually quite diverse; not only racially and ethnically, but socially and economically. Whether one recognizes how diverse the area is depends largely upon the size of one's circle of social and professional contact.
Professionally speaking, the nature of one's occupation tends to dictate the demographics of those with whom we come into contact. So for example, a person who works in a small office setting with very little contact with the general public will be exposed to a more narrow segment of the population than someone who works at the DMV.
Socially speaking, we naturally gravitate to people with whom we have something in common, so we tend to be drawn to people with a similar cultural and socio-economic background. That's why it's called a "comfort zone" and people don't like to spend their social time outside that zone.
No matter how diverse a social circle may seem on the surface, look deeper and you will find its members value their commonalities far more than their differences. For example, you may see an economically diverse social circle, but find that their common athletic interest is of higher value to them than their economic diversity. Or, you may find a racially diverse social circle, but find their common religious beliefs are of higher value than their racial diversity.
It is somewhat paradoxical, but "diversity awareness" simply reinforces our desire for commonality; it just broadens the pool from which we can draw. That is, it does not bring people to "embrace differences" as is the stated goal; it brings people to overlook differences in others if a more highly valued commonality can be found.
If no higher valued commonality can be found, ain't nobody embracing nothin'. If we cannot find a commonality that outweighs the differences, we may "tolerate" others who are different (which is just the politically correct way of saying we'll ignore them), but we won't accept them into our comfort zone.
Consider the meaninglessness of the typical Diversity Guru's favorite oxymoron: "celebrating our differences". We celebrate that which has meaning to us, not that which does not. So if a group is truly celebrating something, it is because it is something the members of the group have assigned shared value. Ergo, it is not a difference that is being celebrated, but a commonality. If one does not value what it being celebrated, he is not celebrating, but is merely in attandance.
In short, we don't embrace differences for the sake of diversity, we ignore differences for the sake of commonality. Sorry, not my rule, blame Mother Nature.
