Looking for Pool Room style hot dog chili recipe
      #1472 - 07/23/02 06:52 PM (68.65.45.105)

Hi,

Anyone willing to share a Pool Room style (Recreation Center) hot dog chili recipe? I would love to know the main seasonings in it. Anyway here is a hot dog chili recipe that is good and quick.

1/2 pound of ground beef
1 can of beef broth
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon of onion powder
2 tablespoons of tomato paste
1 tablespoon of corn starch
salt and pepper
optional - Texas Pete

Brown the ground beef breaking it into small pieces.
Add the tomato paste.
Add the other dry ingredients except the corn starch.
Add all but about 1/4 of the beef broth.
Add the corn starch to the reserved beef broth.
Add just enough of the corn starch/broth mixture to thicken the chili to the desired thickness. Add salt, pepper and Texas Pete to your taste. Of course, you can add, delete, modify the other ingredients as well.

Has anyone ever tasted Hot dog chili that is similar to the Pool Room's? If so where? Powells market in Lafayette Blvd. USED to have chili that was similar, back "in the day".

Powell's Market still has good chilli dogs. Or, should I say, they are some of the best I've had and I don't like hot dogs as a rule.

Used to get good corn dogs at the old Fredericksburg race track, when I was a kid. Gone is the track and the corn dogs

Any updates on Pool Room style hot dog sauce? I'm pretty sure there is no chili powder in it.

Should we petition the government to hire the pool room to keep national security secrets or is there anyone who knows how to make it and can share some tips here or via PM?

Try allrecipes.com and cooks.com and also Google Hot dog chili. I am NOT a chili fan and the only chili I will eat is my own homemade turkey chili recipe.

Thanks for the replies, folks. Franne64, that recipe sounds really good.

Has anyone ever eaten a Coney dog at Angelo's or Lafayette or American Coney in Detroit? How does the chili at any of those places compare in flavor to Pool Room chili?

OK, after 20 years of trying, I have successfully replicated Pool Room hot dog chili. You will not believe what the two most important ingredients are. The chili tastes so much like the real thing I am having second thoughts about posting it publicly.

A key ingredient to Pool Room style hot dog chili is beef heart. Yep, ground beef heart.

How would you compare the flavor of the chili to pool room hotdog chili?

Cincinnati style chili has cinnamon in it..different than here, and not as.......watery/slimmy as pool room chili. I am assuming you are referring to the pool room downtown on Williams Street..
They also load up their coney's with grated cheese and they are only about 4" long. It took a while to get used to them..There is Skyline chili and Gold Star Chili. They are everywhere and very competitive..I liked Skyline a little better..

They ........also........have.......................
Steak and Shakes in Cincy !!!!!

We do the Chili-o base chili..very,very similar to yours..no tex pete, 1 clove fresh garlic, 1 small vidalia onion, both chopped and cooked with the meat...and we add a can of black beans...you can eat by itself, or because the beans are small, they go on our NATHANS HOT DOGS the next night !!
