Excessive licking
      #1619481 - 01/03/11 06:13 PM (71.171.89.210)

Does anyone know why a dog would continue to lick his mouth? Shadow did this a few months ago, and he is doing it again this evening. He licks both sides of his mouth, and is licking everything: his paws, his bed, his toys. I have looked in his mouth to see if there is something stuck between his teeth or on the roof of his mouth, but I cannot see anything abnormal. No swelling to his mouth or gums. Last time Shadow did this, it resolved on its own within a few hours. I would like to know if there is something I can do to prevent it from happening again. I'm at a loss...

Maybe he licked his ass and is just trying to get the bad taste out of his mouth.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

He's always licking that....so that's not it, but you did make me laugh

I'm thinking it must be an allergic reaction to something, but I don't have a clue to what.

I gave him 25mg of Benadryl. I'll see how that works.

Comedian Ron White has a routine ...he just gave Sluggo ( his dog) something his wife just cooked. She saw him and now Sluggo starts licking his ass...Why do you think he does that..she asks..
Ron said.." he is probably trying to get that taste out of his mouth " !!!

Beach, my old pointer used to have "spells" where he would lick and eat grass, rocks, carpet - he also seemed to be in a daze. After several vet visits (of course, they were never while he was having a spell) and trial and error, I found that benedryl and prednisone worked best. I'd give him a dose of each and crate him for about an hour and he'd be back to normal.

He's now nearly 13 and no longer has them. He now has Cushings, so I guess that's superseded the weird [*d`oh!*].

Hope the benedryl worked for Shadow.

Most vets will tell you that licking is a sign of some kind of allergy. I'm hoping the Benedryl did the trick. If nothing else, it probably made him sleepy and it's kind of hard to lick in your sleep!

How much Benedryl would you give to a 13 lb dog?

Talking about licking, my friend told me she was heavy petting with her husband, on the couch and her dog came over and licked her behind. I didn't know what to say so I started playing my piano.

That's why I've always been afraid to give it to him...don't wanna O.D. my baby. We're fighting "hot spots" right now and he's so itchy...he has terrible skin allergies. Do you know any miracle cures for them?

Have you had him tested to find out what is causing them? If not, try changing him to a grain-free food. Wellness makes some. Go to petfooddirect.com and search for organic/grain-free foods. Also, try adding the innards of Fish Oil and Vitamin E capsules to his food. They love they taste of that oil and it helps by adding Omega 3s.

Grapefruit Seed Extract is wonderful for so many things for humans and also for animals. I have a book called "The healing power of Grapefruit Seed". Now I just have to track it down and hope I did not lend it to anyone who did not return it.Here is the link to the book from Amazon

MM - you may need to get him on prednisone therapy until the hot spots clear up.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, the benadryl helped. It took about an hour after I gave it to him, but he has quit licking. He was fine this morning.

I read online that you can give 1mg/lb every 8 hours. That would mean I could have given Shadow 75mg--that seemed too much to me. I only gave him 25mg and it worked and made him sleepy. I would be afraid to give much more than that.

Hope your "old man" is OK DogResqer, and yours also MM. Thanks again for the advice--you guys are awesome!

Actually, Digger will be going back tomorrow. The oozing item is actually a skin growth next to the lipoma.

It's about the size of one of those 2-bite muffins or scones. Very nasty. It isn't painful, but itchy for him. He goes back tomorrow for blood work and an ACTH stimulus test (for his Cushings). If everything goes okay with that, he'll have surgery to remove this and the one on his anus on Thursday. Since he's nearly 14 (next month), it's a bit risky, but needed. Vet doesn't think the growth is life-threatening (although he'll biopsy both of them) but because it's easily infected and oozes it needs to come off.
