The artical was great and am learning a lot about this area and the government body that runs it, and your right is ruining it. Anyhow, I have never in my life seen so many jelly fish on a shore line, of course this is my first time living near a river that is salt water also. Why are there so many on the shore line and are they harmful if you step on them. Another thing, it looks like even the birds don't eat them. Do you supose is it due to our hot summer?(the jelly fish not the birds. LOL

Yep, they do sting if you get them on your skin. A hot dry summer creates more salt in the river, and that brings more jelly fish, which are good for nothing.

thanks for the info. We will not step on any then and looks like our grand child will have to wait till sping to visit the beach, now that he is old enough. Cold or not, maybe we need it to rid them. My health has improved so much, we want to start walking the beach, so they are not going to keep me away. However, wading is out I guess. LOL , like he will wade any how.

heh heh, reminds me of oncet back in the day when I dove in the water at CB without checking and foundmyself in the middle of the lil' varmints.
it's a good idea to not only learn about the jellyfish, but the life that has always been at the center of Colonial Beach in terms of the water. make friends with watermnen, get out there and sail. Learn the history and be a part of what you moved to.
Then, when it comes to coming to conclusions on what should be done or not, you'll be far better informed as to how the place may continue to have the soul it has, rather than be turned into a quaint, lifeless boutique inhabited by urbane nawthenners with no clue as to Bay culture......

A big amen to that!!! But i'm sorry to say, most of the comeheres don't want our "soul" layed back life atyle, they want the same hurry up, and rush life style that they moved away from. Now back to the Jelly Fish, if you just wait till the water turns colder, the Jelly Fish will disappear.

With Walmart coming and Regina's, Pancho Villa's, Steamers and King's Pizza to eat at, there is ABSOLUTELY ZERO "O" reason to go to CB.... No boxes needed as 2 more "potential comehere" investors passed on CB and are looking further down the "neck" to open their establishments.... keep sending that $$$$$ away CB..

---------------- Adolph's meat tenderizer...DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT !!! Gods gift to beach people..Most everyone living on or near the water has this with them at all times...The Jellyfish sting may be worse than a bee sting..then multiply that by 100, if the damn thing wraps around you) and it hurts and will keep hurting for up to 30 mins... the jellyfish have small cells called nematocists on their tentacles. They have a flagellum that when touched shoots out into the victim to kill it (small fish)..that is how they feed...ok..now for the easy part....the "poison" is a protein...meat tenderizer has papilla in it which breaks down proteins !! TA DAAAA..So if you pour it on and rub it in usually within 5 mins or so it stops... Also...for the really daring...you can pick them up..tentacles and all in your hand...ok..not quite that simple..you have to pick them up with your hand on top and fingers curling under them so nothing comes in contact except the palm side of your hand..Your skin is thick and tough enough so that the nematocists won't bother you... Now..I hear you all out their groaning like "he doesn't have a friggin clue what he is talking about"..or what an idiot....but...all true !! MF's believe it or not !!!

I grew up on the beach in New England, and that's what we used for stings.

Tangled with a Portuguese Man o' War when I was a kid while we were living in the Fla. keys. Think it was Key Largo...maybe not. My chest, back and legs looked like someone beat the crap out of me with a coathanger.
Hurt like crap and Adolph's barely touched it. Gotta go with that solution as a rule though.

I wouldn't be proud of being called "old" and "useless." I'm reminded of an observation about girlfriends I have heard. Once you get to be a couple, there are times when some of them set out to change that which attracted them to you in the first place, generating WTF? moments.
The same is true of my view of comeheres in general. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to ease one's way into the existing social structure and ways of doing things. This is not the sort of thing that comes automatically if one comes from the big city or some anthill subdivision. Drop the attitude and blend in, I say. Be a fully integrated part of it all, rather than come in with all your bright ideas trying to change things around.

Burgerjoint,I got to agree with you! If I have said once, I have said it a hundred times. If you want to come to Colonial Beach and live our laid back, slow moving, rough around the edges life style, and build a nice modrate home, you are more then welcome. Don't come in town with your big bucks, and build a half million dollar mini-mansion which makes real estate taxes go up, and try to tell us we cant do things which we have been doing for over a hundred years. Maybe you should do a little research before you decide to move to the beach. An example of this is a new couple moved in our neighborhood and built a $400,000.00 mini-mansion. Six months after they moved in, they call the police and complained about a dog barking six houses away. If they had done a little research, they would have found that there are nine dogs living in the immediate area of their new home, some which even run loose. Did they think the neighbors were going to get rid of their pets just because they had moved into the neighborhood, and did'nt want to hear dogs barking? OH I FORGOT,THIS TOPIC IS ABOUT JELLY FISH! Sorry Comehere, I just get carried away some times when people try to tell me I have to change the way I live just because they don't like it.

When I was a kid we would wade for soft crabs in the sea grass and of course there were loads of nettles. We wore long pants and an old pair of sneakers and never got stung.
On the subject of comeheres....in the Promise Land and local area....they can be wonderful! All of the people on my crew that I volunteer with at the local hospital are comeheres....I am the only bornhere. Yes, they have run up the price of waterfront property but they have given much to our community also. They volunteer at the local library, at the volunteer fire department, rescue squad and auxillaries. Most of them are well educated retirees and have money and they part with to make our community better. Put forth an effort to get to know them. Some of them have fascinating backgrounds and life experiences.
I don't care where you are from when it comes to pets or anything else people should be considerate of their neighbors. I have 3 dogs and a big fenced in yard for them. If they bark excessively I make them come inside. I don't want them running off and getting hit by a car or getting torn up by some other animal. I don't want them being a nuisance to my neighbors. My closest neighbor has 3 dogs also and an invisible fence. No matter where you were born try being considerate of others. I consider my next door neighbors as dear friends and I want it to stay that way.
