My 14 year old daughter enrolled at Spotsy Middle was injured by another student on April 27th. He took scissors and was pretending to cut her hair snapping them behind her head for approximately 10-15 mins. She turned in her desk to tell him to stop and cut off tip of her ear. The school called me, and when I arrived they had stopped the bleeding, had the piece of her ear in ice. Unfortunately the ER couldnt reattach. Tell this to a 14 year old girl who at this age is self conscious about her looks.
My main problem is with how the school principal Beckett and the Officer Jones that is assigned to the school telling my daughter when the accident happened was to put Neosporin on it and it would scab over.
Is this not considered a weapon? Because the school feels he didnt do it intentionally that he wouldnt be charged. But rumor at the school is that all he got was 6 days suspension. So what if he cut off someones finger, does he get 10? Be REAl!!!!!
She is back at school after a second trip to the ER two days after accident becuase it was infected.

sounds like time to find an attorney. you'd be surprised the effect that has. is the dimwit sorry? man enough to face you and daughter and say it? that would affect my decision
although in my case its a moot point a boy child doing that would miss the rest of the year for medical reasons, possibly a girl child. never been much for hitting girls though. might hire that done

I have talked with an attorney. Unfortunately unless the teacher heard my daughter tell him to stop or she told the teacher nothing we can do. My daughter didnt have time, she turned her head to tell him to stop when the accident happened. I will pursue it further. I have a meeting with the school board, not sure how far that will get me. I just want someone to tell me the truth. The principal told my daughter today not to worry about seeing him in the school the rest of the year, but then the school nurse has on the calender that he is returning on May 5th. I have not talked to the young man or the family who have tried to contact me, because with still seeing the humiliation and the pain my daughter is suffering I would probably say something that would not be in my character. I dont want expulsion, I want this young man to be enrolled in some kind of counseling or something that will show him that the pranks have got to stop. It is the second time in a month, this boy has been suspended due to pranks, and each time getting worse. What does it take before the school steps up , him killing another child?????

This boy harmed your daughter, a plastic surgeon can fix the ear and his parents should pay for it.
I work with a woman that lost her ear in a car crash and when you look at her you cant tell that its not real.

We are looking into that, we are having to wait to get rid of the infection. It is the tip of the ear, but couldnt be reattached. We will see what the surgeon says after the infection is gone. Thanks.

seeing your daughter regularly might be the best punishment.
how he handles saying he's sorry would be big with me. i had a lady swore out a bogus felony warrant on me 2 years ago it got tossed but i declined sueing based on the way her husband handled it. shes a dingbat and got mental issues and i couldn't see taking the house he and their kids live in from them, though it was tempting

Sorry this happened to her, I'm sure it is painful mentally as well as physically.

Where was the teacher and what was he/she doing during the 10-15 minutes the boy was playing with scissors near your daughters head? What do other students say? Surely someone else saw him doing this???

The statements that the kids gave to the office, and I now have copies of say that the teacher handed out the scissors and were supposed to be working on a project while she was logging into her computer to put on a cd for them to listen to. I was told by the school that it was only 10-15 mins, and the young man stated he only snapped the scissors 3-4 times, but I feel that once he put the scissors beside her head that was endagerment, I have talked with several teachers on the high school level and stated the student would have been expelled automatically, no questions asked. I dont want to ruin this boys school career, I know at this age boys will be boys, my main thing is for the school to be honest with me, have this boy enrolled into counseling or something that will teach this boy that the pranks have got to stop!!!!!!

by no means intepret this as defending the boy, but i was a terrible prankster. it took some thing real bad happeneing to mellow me out. i'd want the lil sob to see your daughter and her ear as often as possible to remind him of what he did. a friend of my wifes kid played with dads gun while home with sister. it was fired by mistake dad made him wear the empty casing on string around his neck as reminder. worked well for the lil sob.

Thank you for that, Im glad that you learned, Im hoping this young man does before something terrible happens. My daughter has been so awesome considering what she has been through, she is so mad at the boy right now, but in the mean time does not want him to be expelled from school because after the accident he is the one that got the tissues for the bleeding and she said he was crying. I hope with some counseling that he has also learned.

him crying is a good sign. if you can bear it let him apologise. i'm thinking if he was like me it might got his attention. funny thing is odds are if he was teasing your daughter that means he liked her. and that really makes what he did a good lesson.heck if a kid did that to my heatan and was crying i might even find some mercy.... maybe. but no tears and i'd install some for him

Coming from a past prankster, I appreciate you making me feel better. I have certainly started thinking different sinc ehte accident. The day it happened after I got the call from the school, I was mad as Hell, knowing I was gonna press charges and the words that came into my head that I was going to say to this boy and his parents. Now I feel sorry for the boy. I just want to know that he is seriously sorry and that this has taught him a lesson. Its funny , I told my daughter the same thing, that he might have liked her. She said funny way of showing it. lol. My daughter and I have joked alot about it because its our way of dealing with it.

My daughter was saying dang, if some guy loves her, what will he do....
I told her that guys do funny things to get a girls attention.
The funny thing I told the officer that day of the accident. That boy was lucky he didn`t actually
cut her hair, because then they would have been pulling her off of him lol This is a girl who
spends 30 mins in front of a mirror doing her hair each morning.

Do you still have the piece that couldn't be reattached? The principal could make him wear it on a necklace as a reminder.

How big was the chunk he cut off of her ear?
I can't imagine kids being allowed to have scissors at school that are big enough or sharp enough to cut off ear cartilidge, so I'm imagining a little piece of skin?
If the kid felt really bad, is suspended6 days, and apologizes, I think that's punishment enough for a tiny chunk of skin... especially if your daughter is over it.
Accidents happen... and she'll get a good "when I was a kid" story out of it.
Now... if he cut off half of her ear, I'd be REALLY concerned about what kind of scissors kids are using at school!

i'd like the kid to have to write about what it was like how he feels. and keep it for reference.

What happened was wrong...however...expelling the boy from school will, in fact, ruin his school career. Be happy with the suspension...it probably taught him a lesson.

You know what bothers me the most, is the fact that we send our kids to school thinking they are safe there. I guess that's why my daughter came home last week telling me a boy had hit her twice in school. Needless to say I talked to the principal and let her know that if an incident happens again I will be calling the police, a lawyer, social services, and whoever else will listen. It seems like the punishment for kids acting up in school today is far less than what the kids got when I was in school....anyway, I hope your daughter is ok and that she doesn't have any lasting effects from this incident.

I believe you are entitled to sue the kid's parents to recoup medical expenses/pain and suffering. I don't know the situation or kids involved, but I think expulsion would be a better punishment.

Yes they were large enough to cut thru the cartlidge. They were measured 16 inches tip to handle. Yes it did cut a large chunk out of the ear. Enough that a 14 year old girl knows it is there whenever she looks in the mirror. She knows it is there every time she tries to sleep at night, she knows it is there every time she walks into a store or public place and people are staring. She knows it is there for right now, every time she has to take two types of medicine every 4 hours for the next two weeks. She knows it is there every time she is taking a shower, because it burns like " hell". She will also know it is there when she is putting her hair up for the 8th grade formal. Again another person just like the school system that acts like it is nothing.
Well IM not done with the school system, they want to blow it off like other problems at Spotsy Middle , well they met the wrong parent. It is not the first time that this school has had problems, or I have had problems with this school, and I have let it go.
Well this problem drew blood, and I want to make sure that it doesn`t happen to another child, or even worse kills a child.

You are right...but...please don't blame the teachers. They can't do those things that you were submitted to. If they do, things get turned around and they are the ones that the parents get outside parties involved like: police, a lawyer, social services, and whoever else will listen. It's not the teachers fault when kids do these things in class...it's their job to try to prevent it...but how?

My son was dismissed from a local private school for having seizures. Go figure. A kid cuts a child with scissors and gets suspended, a child who has medical problems gets kicked out. Puzzling, I tell ya, just puzzling! ReBecca

I had a similar experience as aslrebecca.
My son was also asked to leave his local private school. He has Tourette Syndrome. It was a horrible experience. It took him several months to adjust to his new school but he eventually did and he still keeps in touch with alot of his old friends.
I think this new year will be better. I hope it will be for your son too.

Its awful that the schools turn their backs on our kids, but in the long run I think it has helped my daughter be a stronger person. She is getting ready to start high school, and knowing the boy that did it is going to a different school makes it a little easier.

It was a terrible accident, although unintentional. I feel your anger, but for the most part, the student body will basically punish the boy for it [by rejection, avoiding him, and so forth], not to mention his parents. Ask to make a deal to fix her ear by plastic surgery, then eventually the parents can make the boy pay for it once he gets a job. Then all's fair. I give my condolences to your daughter though, that is a truly traumatizing affair.
