CB Residents... Read, Learn and CHANGE!!
      #1508623 - 08/07/09 08:26 AM (75.198.186.105)

For those who REALLY want improvements made at the Beach, here's a Great Start!!... Read, Learn and CHANGE!! This is a survey of 500 CB residents, see what your fellow neighbors want, oddly enough it's the same demands/requests w "come-heres" have been making for years... FYI, if I could actually see a "Town Plan" that addressed these concerns we would seriously consider opening a business in CB.. To view the survey results and COMMENTS for actual CB residents go to..http://www.colonialbeachva.net/pdf/colonialbeachsurveyresultssummaryfinal2.pdf.... Now if the Town and it's residents would only act.... Biggest complaint is the overall appearance of Colonial Ave....Terrible representation of the Town..

Not getting any results, shows a lot of serveys but does not bring me to Colonial Beach. Is there a way you can email the site to me. I really would like to read it and see.
My husband is interested in getting involved here, he used to be on the planning board in our hometown and let me tell you, they hated change, but he was able to get people to come to some kind of agreements. The sad thing is, you have to move to work, and many of the people who wanted to see our town grow, left for work. The town is looking just like here, all beat up and depressed. It can turn around though, if people learn how to put their heads together and make a good workable plan.

Hi HD,
Colonial Beach looks soooo much better than it did in the 90's! I am actually proud to say I live here!

Good to hear it, I think I read more postive than negative for this place. It is going through growing pains but in the end, I think things will be even better. I see a few mistakes as far as buying tickets to park at the other end of the beach, residents should have a pass for the year. People who use the boat ramp should also be allowed a pass, especially if it is a resident. Non residents need to pay, as if you were going to a state park , picnic area or boat ramp. It is too small to accomodate every one that is not from the area. I would gladly buy a year around ticket with in reason.

By the way, I tried to look up the stuff you said to read, kept going to a place that had nothing to say at all. It would be nice if the person, who said to read it, could email the form it self. I would like to be educated. Sorry, the link went to a dead end every time.

Colonial Beach has always had its ups and downs.
What makes it something to treasure is not the appearance as much as the culture that has long given it the zestiness over ther years that would be tragic to lose if it turned into some plastic saccarin boutique....

Kudo's to High Tides for their New "Tiki-Bar"!!!... Glad to see some "positive and asthetic" improvement at the Beach.... Unfortunately the painting of the parking lines at the point are the exact opposite, looks like it was done by a third grader with a can of white spray paint?? This is the problem with the way problems are handled at the Beach, they are almost always done "Half-Ass", with more attention given to the fact that "something" was done rather than the "right" thing being done....DO SOMETHING WITH COLONIAL AVE..... and don't let the person who gave the order to use the spray cans get involved....

To view the survey simply google "colonial beach survey" and the 2008 Town Comprehensive Plan is shown along with the surveys.... The Town needs NEW BLOOD and NEW IDEAS in order to survive.... Time has proven that "their" way doesn't work, simply look at the mix of Retail/Residential nightmares that currently exist... The Town planners must have been "out fishin" when Colonial Ave. was designed, however it does seem to a sort of "zestiness" to it doesn't it.

Comerhere, if Colonial Beach is so bad, why don't you just stop coming to the beach. I am not trying to be rude, just practical. For a place that is so bad, the beach really has been packed every weekend.

I'm not trying to be rude either however I've been coming to the Beach since 1960, have family that lives there and feel VERY STRONGLY about the FUTURE of Colonial Beach. Too many people have idly stood by as bad decision after bad decision have been made. I will offer PRAISE when warranted and at the same token will CHASTISE when warranted.... The Tiki-Bar looks GREAT and is a visual and practical enhancement to the Beach.... Tha parking lines at the Point look rediculous.... Do you disagree??... Do you feel that Colonial Ave. warrants Praise or Pity???... You should read the above survey results as they are a mirror image of what we "come-heres" have been wanting for years yet they are results from actual CB residents and not visitors like us... Rather than address the shortcomings of the Beach you'd prefer than VISITORS like ourselves simply stay away, this is the mindset that has created such a nightmare. The direction and VISUAL disarray has been one of the main factors that have KEPT PEOPLE AWAY.... Do you believe the answer to CB's problems are to shooo away the naysayers or change the direction of leadership??... A "BEACH TOWN" survives on it's VISITORS, please share your decison...

Sorry for being such a perfectionist however look at the writting on the shed used at the point. Do you honestly think it would be too difficult to "center and level" the lettering?? I mean come on, lets show some of that "Drifter Pride" and do things right (the first time)... My Mother had a saying, "When I stop correcting you or questioning you is when I stop caring for you"... Please don't try to make me stop addressing the Positive and Negative changes at the Beach, the Beach NEEDS ALL opinions as well as all the visitors it can get. Instead of telling people to quit coming you should at least listen to those are making the drive and spending their money.... I simply want the Beach to be the BEST it can be and the current condition, decisions and leadership leave much to be desired

You can shoot the messenger however you can't change the message.... Again please correct me if I'm wrong in any of my observations.... Does the Tiki-Bar look nice?? Is it a Visual improvement?.... Is the lettering crooked on the shed and Do the parking lines look rediculous???....Are these visual improvements or do they draw attention to the fact that they were done hastily... Even the parking permit signs were handpainted rather than getting actual lettering??... Please tell me if you've seen whats being talked about and share your opinion...

I'm curious as to what reference NJ has in this discussion??

Someone please tell me why the paving of the road that circles the Beach and Point wasn't finished?? The complete paving of this road would offer an IMMEDIATE visual improvement. Unfortunately it's just one more item that wasn't completed???... WHO MAKES THESE DECISIONS and how can we correct them or address them??....

Having convicts in prison jumpsuits on a ladder painting the New Police sign, while an officer stand by with a shotgun doesn't offer visiting families a "warm welcome".... The Police sign should have been painted White instead of Blue as dark colors enhance the numerous dents in the siding where White would have actually help hide the dents.... The Beach sure is Beautiful with the sun coming up over the water...

I have to think it is because they can't afford the profesional equipment to do it like they do on highways. Colonial Beach is not earning that kind of money and there is so much that needs improvent yet. I am glad they are doing something to make improvements. Cost to improve anything these days are sky high, that is why this country is in the state it is now, gougin.

I have to wonder why your hear, or how much have you offered of your self to make improvements. You want your community to be better looking get out there and give a hand. I see unmowed laws, houses falling apart, yet many do not do anything, we expect the town to do it. This is a very old community, and with the economy in the state it is in there is not enough money to do much of anything but at least they are doing little things at a time. I like what they did with the tiki bar, even I will think about going to that. I saw it, did not even notice the so call amaturish line, or the writing on the bar, I saw how nice it looked. I am a little concerned about parking, but it would be willing to pay for a spot for a couple of dollars, for 2hr parking just to sit at the bar or have a nice meal. Move to the city where you worry about your house being broke into or your neighbor does not even speack to you. It may be pretty but it is high rent, taxed and you don't dare walk the side walk when it gets dark.

It's a sign, blue is the color of the police, but your right about the white. As far as convics, I personally thing that is great, at least they are working and using tax payer money usefully. This kind of think is done all over the sother states even NY started doing it some years ago. I was surprised to see the police station had moved. Good place for it.

Comerhere, I took a ride yesterday looking for those unprofessional lines which were painted with a spray can. I finally found them, and yes i will agree that they did not look very professional. Now I have a request for you. Please tell me how you would paint the lines on a area which is made up of sand and loose gravel. The area is only about 30 feet from the actual beach. If you can come up with a reasonable soluation, I will be glad to pass it along to the public works director

Pave it, then paint it (or do nothing, when you do something half-ass it only draws attention to the fact that you did spomething HALF -ASSED).... If the Point "looked" professional, cleanly kept and had some plantings then MAYBE people would treat it with respect?? However when it looks the way it does it's only natural for people to trash it.... The Point could be an incredible attraction if it were planned correctly...

HenryDonald, this is why I'm constanly baiting the residents of CB with my "come-here" attitude!!!.. I'm trying to instill some "self-pride" and get the residents off their butts to create CHANGE.... I'm not a resident however I, my friends and my family are VISITORS and we try to give you a visitors view of how the Beach looks to us... The complaints you make about the condition of homes in the area in an issue I won't touch. Several people have no means or family to help with their decaying properties and are forced to live as they do, I WOULD HOWEVER be willing to give my time and sweat to helpthese folks.... I've offered my Time, Sweat and MONEY in the past only to be shoowed away... You can't help those who don't want or feel they need the help.... You can lead the horse to the water but you can't make themn drink it, CB it at the waterhole hopefully they'll drink from it and not drowned in it

The sad part about the childish antics of the leadership in CB is that it's made the local headlines. Any "potential" visitors are definately going to stay away and what do you think it's done to the home values??... Positive breeds positive and negative breeds negative.... Read the Fredericksburg Star's stories "comments" to see how CB is viewed by others.... It's kinda hard to attract a "better class of people" when you can't attract any at all??

Why on earth would you have your Police Dept. as the first thing visitors see upon arriving at their vacatiopn spot???? Can anyone tell me where the Police depts are in Ocean City, Va. Just downloaded it and gave it a quick look. Will return in days to come with a more thoughtful analysis. A few things jumped out at me: 1-I found myself in agreement w/the majority opinion on nearly every question; 2-Found that more surprising when I checked the demographics of the respondents, and discovered the respondents were predominantly older empty-nesters. That I find myself (working age w/school-age children) in agreement w/this group honestly surprised me greatly; 3-The remarks tacked on at the end were more revealing (I think) about the respondents' thoughts than the survey. They were almost unanimous in their frustration with town government and a need to expand the non-residential tax base, things I have been harping on for years.

I just reread this thread and I must admire what some are trying to do. If you go to:

http://landstudiopc.com/Colonial_Beach_Comp_Clients_Page.html

and read your way thru this professional paper you are stuck with a few points that Colonial Beach has been talking about for a very very long period of time. Consider that 25 percent of the population lives in poverty, consider the rate of crime, the subsidized housing problem, consider the board walk - once a jewel, it is now the Walk of Shame. For decades the town has been going to ……….but just can’t.

Consider that the ways of the past just haven’t worked. What is left to do? The Town today is considering what to do about their “people/beach” problem. Some will come forth and given their personal opinion – with little impact on the town’s government. So once again what is left to do?

If just one town resident would form a simple citizen’s committee, find an excellent speaker, a good writer and gather the input directly from the people – the effect would be felt by all. Getting on the town Councils agenda, sending a copy of your speech to the newspapers before the meeting and then making a highly polished presentation is all that would be required to start to move a mountain.

The “people” have as many good ideas as they do nutty ones and public servants want to do a good job. So help them out - pick a “small” issue, talk to everyone, get input, see what will work and move the ball forward. Remember, even those you might disagree with you would have to admire a well thought out plan and might want to work with you on something that they are interested in.

It only takes one person to pick up the ball – the game continues?

With the wide variety of professional retirees that have settled here, there has to be someone among them with PR, public speaking experience and good organizational skills that sees the necessity and urgency of this.

Well, I - for one - would step up to the plate - if I lived there. I had thought many times of moving to CB and each time was "pushed back" by what goes on in CB. I had always hoped that someone would care enough to step up. You see that one person would attract a rather large following. With backing, their efforts would be rewarding. CB needs a "Townie" to walk & talk about the town. Tis true there is a lot of talent & seasoned wisdom in CB. It is aged talent, maybe even tired talent. With no ego to fill, nothing to prove, they would support a leader, but not be the leader.

CB needs a Mother. One with kids in school and a desire to become the most important person in the history of Colonial Beach. Are you out there Mom?

I'm sorry Silvertop...I was under the impression that you did live there. I agree 100 % with your ideas and a Mother would be a great thing for the town...alas....Mom's are busy people!

I agree also, a Mother would help to make change, infact a mother and father who believe in becoming apart of the community as a whole.

Love living in CB.
