NASCAR CARS ARE TO SLOW
      #1489011 - 05/29/09 10:15 AM (98.183.36.204)

My and your vehicle (earth), on which we all are riding right now, is traveling towards the East at 1000 MPH. It is also revolving around the sun at 12 miles per second. The sun drags it along at 2,000,000 MPH as it goes wherever it is going.

So, if all of us are already moving at 2,000,000 MPH, how can a 150+ MPH car, impress any of us?

The diminished speed of the cars has certainly lessened the accident footage. In that vein, NASCAR has become painfully boring. How exciting can it be to watch vehicles with permanently floored acceleration pedals on banked highways going below the maximum limit? 8-|

Go to Potomac,Eastside or VMS and watch the cars race on dirt. You might even get to see my son race

Since a Cup car can now drive at over 235, I think NASCAR and the drivers are thrilled that the speeds are kept down. Why would we want to kill them?

Also I think 2 of the last 3 races set a caution flag record. Dover ended well yesterday. With just over 30 laps to go we had the 48 trying his butt off to run down the leaders. Unless you are a 14 or 16 fan, it was exciting. All 3 races this weekend hate late cautions that set up exciting finishes.

also, in my opinion, true race fans aren't watching to see the wrecks. That has always irked me. I am a literal lifelong race fan (being going since I was baby when my dad raced limited sportsman at Old Dominion), and I've never understood the mentality of those that want to see the wrecks.

If they had to fix the car for next weeks race they wouldn't be so happy to see the wrecks.

that is exactly right. Unfortunately, unless you've really been involved in racing, I guess you just don't think of it that way.

We're not talking about those involved in racing, we're talking about fans.

It's like putting something into a puck, a bat, or a ball that restricts how the performers perform. Imagine baseball with 60% less home runs, football that doesn't have 50 yard field goals, hockey that has a puck shaped like a triangle. Imagine Woods using balls that restricted the drives to 210 yards. ;-)

I'd prefer that NASCAR let racers race, rather than promote wins by the same small bevy of racers every time. I was totally shocked when 14 didn't bump 48 by tradition and go on for a win, and I wonder why he didn't. 48 obviously had the fastest COT Sunday for whatever reason - it wasn't strictly a Johnson win. I believe every racer out there races his heart out, some to no avail.

Perhaps we should take NASCAR off the air and put dirt on. 8-~

If you want to see the cars sideways through the turn, dirt is the race to watch.

I have no problem with a little rubbing but to punt someone on the last lap for a win is not racing to me. Anybody can do that, it takes skill and nerves to drive the car not a big bumper. Big E never impressed me for that reason

Still, it's a tradition that didn't last long enough, AFAIC. They can't make NASCAR any wimpier, can they?

oh, I agree that they've screwed NASCAR up. I wish the cars still looked like "stock" cars, and, politically incorrect or not, I wish it was still "American" made cars. If there is such a thing anymore. I was just making a point that I've never understood why people actually want to see them wreck.

I miss the old days.

I hear ya about the "American" aspect. I'm equally not happy with the "Honda" engine choice in the Indy Car series. I haven't been watching that for about 10 years, for various reasons, and that was one of 'em. Did watch the 500 this last time, and it was a very exciting race. But I miss the engineering wars, between the chassis makers, the engine makers and the tire makers. Lots of that stuff is now "spec" with few choices. Also, as for engineering, there was _also_ the forced induction vs. the normally aspirated wars, which was _also_ a lot of fun to predict, bet on, root for, ponder, etc.

Racing in general has been destroyed at the highest levels. What really frosts me is that I went to sleep again during the month of May, and this time the World of Outlaws sprints snuck into Virginia without me noticing. That is the absolute most exciting form of racing on the planet, with 800 hp engines in 1200 lb cars, and sliding around dirt banked ovals at over 100 mph and 3 - 4 abreast. I mean... wow... and I missed it, dang it.

I love WOO too. I knew they were going to be at Virginia Motor Speedway, but couldn't bring myself to part with the $30 for a ticket. They run sprints up at Old Dominion every couple weeks - they are turning some super fast laps on that track, faster than the late models. Not as fun as watching them on dirt though.

I was there

Unfortunatly our car wasn't ready to race but we did go to watch. My brother got the "hood" off of Kinser's car last year after he wrecked. Nice garage piece.

From what I have read only a couple of those cars have been in a wind tunnel, The bodies are .040 Alum sheet with plastic noses.

I think NASCRAP stop racing stock cars in the 70's
I really don't care if they race Volvo's as long as it is a real Volvo and not a tube chassis with a hand formed body and a Volvo sticker on the front.
