Mrs. Sanford is not listed as principal of Lewis and Clark Elementary in Caroline County. Does anyone know what happened?

L&C Principal retires; audit asks questions

Lewis and Clark Elementary School principal Cynthia Sanford unexpectedly announced her retirement effective November 3 after sixteen years of service to the Caroline County Public School System and the Ladysmith Community.
Sanford had served as principal at Ladysmith Elementary School and, most recently, at Lewis and Clark Elementary School, which is in its first year of operation.
At the November 10 Caroline County School Board meeting, which followed Sanford’s retirement announcement, Clota Gerhardt, Director of Budget and Finance for Caroline County Schools, presented the annual audit report for the school district. The audit was conducted by an outside firm; Creedle, Jones, and Alga, P.C.
Contained in the report were numerous notations regarding financial procedural violations that occurred while Sanford was principal at Lewis and Clark. According to the report, Sanford was allegedly receiving blank checks for purchases without receipts. Additionally, a receipt was found for a personal item was reimbursed to Sanford, who has agreed to repay the money.
Also included in the audit report was the discovery of two cell phone lines being paid for Sanford without explanation for the second line.
Attempts to reach Sanford for comment were unsuccessful.
According to Dr. Gregory Killough, Superintendent of Schools, a search for a new principal for Lewis and Clark Elementary School will begin immediately. Mr. Harold Pellegreen, Lewis and Clark Vice Principal, will serve in the interim as acting principal.
