Hi there,
My wife and I like Japanese restaurants -- she's a sushi fan and I like the steakhouses. I see that Sakura Japanese Steak House has both (according to The Source Of All Knowledge -- aka internet). Is it any good, or would I do better to go to Kobe Steakhouse in Garrisonville? Are there other alternatives?

Sakura is good. BUT Kobes is absolutely worth the drive!!! The chefs/staff (Kobe)are more personable and the food is always outstanding. Do not go to Otani...not good. I have heard that Otani and Sakura share the same owner(s)???

Sakura, is not what it used to be.. By a LONG shot. Our last 2 trips to Sakura were disappointing, the food was just bland. Another Alternative, would be Otani's. Haven't tried Kobe.

Ozeki Japanese Steakhouse will be opening in South Point fairly soon. I've heard good and bad about Otani.

Ozeki! I remember seeing them under construction. I really like Kobe but may need to support the local business.

I love Sakura. We go there every year for my birthday. All though, this year the chef was not as personable and hardly did anything that they usually do and didn't even talk to us. But, it usually is great everytime we go. My sister goes to Kobe sometimes and says it is excellent and she thinks it is better than Sakura. I have never been to Kobe.
If you live closer to Sakura go there and I bet you will like it. I hope you get a good cook.

I think Otani's and Sakura are both pretty gross.
Check out Little Tokyo on Rt. 1. The food is really good an authentic - but it's not a steak house and I'm not sure if she has sushi. The owner is super duper nice. She's a one woman show, so you'll have to be patient if it's crowded - but it rarely is.

UPDATE We went to Kobe for Valentine's Day dinner and have mixed reviews.
We had reservations and got a table in about 10 minutes. Folks without them got seats in about 15 or 20 -- not bad. (Standing inside the door was about the second coldest place on earth, so we were happy to be seated.) Service and food were spectacular, as at all Kobe's (which I suspect is a franchise chain). The chef, altho' young, did a very good job. The guys next to us had a better one, but no complaints about ours. As expected, it was expensive -- dinner for two was $90 with tip -- but we were both full and took a small box home for the boy.
The only complaint we had was the building itself. It looked like a converted slophouse with minimum Japanese decorations. The one we had been to before (St Louis) was spectacular and we expected this one to be similar and were disappointed in that one regard.
Ozeki, by the way, is not open, but they are hiring, if anyone is looking for a job.
Thanks those of you who recommended Kobe -- we had a great dinner!

Ozeki is good. I like it in the burg as my favorite right now. I can tell you for a fact though that Otani and Sakura are not owned by the same person.

Went to Sakura-Woodbridge 2 weeks ago. Horrible. Everything was cooked well done. I made a comment to the chef, he smiled and said "it's medium rare" HARDLY. Last time I went to Kobe in Stafford they put us on the bridge table. Didn't see any cooking and ran out of fried veggies before he got to our plates. "Sorry"
