Anyone want to meet me @ Phelps today? I'm taking my bow and do a little practice shooting, and then out for some scouting.
I'm leaving the house @ 11.
These directions will take you to me, and I'm in a Red Fordf150 4x4. You can't miss my tags "CUZFUG", what a hoot! lol

Rte.3 west, go past Lake of the Woods, further down on left is Germana College
A couple miles past college, turn right on (Yellow Bottom Rd) @ SHELL GAS STATION
Go to stop sign @ (Eleys Ford Rd). Go left.
Just a mile or two and take a right on (Edwards Shop Rd.)
Stay on (Edwards Shop Rd) and you will cross a ONE lane bridge.
This road runs into (Stones Mill Rd) stay right
Just around the corner you will see signs for the WMA, take a right on (Edwards Shop Rd) and cross the bridge over the rappahannock.
At stop sign is (Sumerduck Rd). Take a right, go across a small creek (1st WMA parking area) and up the hill around the curve. You will see a farm house on the right going aound the big curve.
At top of curve turn right into the parking lot. (There is a mobile trailer with a fence around it)
YOUR THERE!

Alternate Route. (This looks like a more simple rte? I think I will try it Sunday)

Stay on Rte3 and take a right on Revercomb Rd.
Left on Maddens Tavern Rd.
Maddens Tavern turns into Youngs Ln.
Youngs Ln ends @ Stones Mill Rd. Take a right
Follow Stones Mill Rd and take a right (Edwards Shop Rd) where the WMA signs are and cross the river.
Take a right on Sumerduck Rd.

Yep. Just depends on where I start. 17 is easy, but then you have to drive all the way to the other side of the WMA, which actually makes the rte. 3 directions real easy from the burg.
Anyway, went scouting and low and behold scared a few deer from their beds. woohoo!
Found me some real nice ambush site setups for next month. For anyone that's going with me this season, I can almost guarantee you will have at least some doe's walk up on ya. Gonna be exciting

I guess I'll do my scouting this Saturday for a good place for waterfowl and small game, but I will be sporting my bow just in case I run into a nice buck.

I wish all a very safe and successful opening day of the 2005/2006 Deer harvest. May your arrows/quarrels run true

Sat, nothing. Been hunting all week long (all day), still nothing. I can't figure out why I don't see any bucks? I see does all the time though.

Tuesday, I was sitting in the late evening behind a forked tree just about 5 yds above a creek. Well it got dark in the woods, so I stood up to leave, and dang it, this deer was 10 yds in front of me. NEVER heard a sound from where he came down the hill, straight in front of me.
I'm sure he was a buck (too dark to see) because doe's aren't that sneaky. He was one pissed off deer when he saw me, as he took off about 5 yds, stopped behind a tree, and then ran off snorting like mad at me. Pretty sure he was big, just by the sound he made running cuz he sounded like a horse taking off...lol

After that, I almost decided to give up hunting forever!

Cuz,

You do realize that the early archery season at Phelps are either sex days. Does are fair game as well as bucks, if you are looking for meat or possible donations to the Feed the Hungry campaign. I'm going to try and spend a few hours Saturday morning to harvest a deer, if lucky enough not having to work.

Take care

Actually, does are legal in the late bow season as well.

I've seen 28 deer (6 of which I ran across in the dark and only does from what I could tell) at Phelps this season, but not once have I had a shot! :(

I'm prob the most luck/unlucky hunter in the state...lol
I see deer all the time but never get a shot with the bow.

The only true shot I would have had was Sat, when I just made it to the top of the tree, and a doe walked up the trail I was hunting. Bow was on the ground....lmao

I had a strange thing happen today at Phelps. I had a little six pointer tailing a doe heading right toward me standing againts a tree with my bow. As my heart started bounding, I had already marked off the 40 , 30 and 20 yard marks around me. At 40, I pulled and set without spooking either and was waiting for them to close when at about 30 yards, both stopped and looked right - when BAMMM, a smoke poler's ball slammed into the bucks side. Talk about some splendid thoughts but strangely enough, things started with "only in Virginia!

The doe hightailed it out doing a 180 and the buck took two steps and dropped.

I stayed put and waited about five minutes before a man and his son came into view. The kill was the kid's first as told by his expression/behavior and later confirmed when the father approached. According to him, neither of them had noted me before shooting. I know I had not noted them earlier when I surveyed my position throughout my four hour stay. Either way, I allowed the joys of the first deer to be enjoyed and left while they were examining the deer.

I know Phelps is heavily visited, but I wonder if any similar things have happened to others? I know I can't be the first.

Hey, yea I'm in a stand (actually bought a new aluminum climber, about 22 lbs). I have shot at a doe, couldn't figure if it went over or under, and the opening day of BP, I had just walked into the woods around 11 and heard a deer running and snorting. He stopped about 60 yds away, looked back at where he came from, then ran almost to me and stopped at 40 yds. I shot, hit one of those small limbs u can't see, deer ran away. 5 minutes later, 4 does walked by, but they were about 60 yds so no shot.
the buck however was at least a 4 pointer.

Does anyone have the use for a tree stand. I have one I want to get ride of. My wife ordered it from Cabelas about 3 years ago. I have only used it twice. When she ordered she went by the price. Becuase she went with one of the higher priced stands its a heavy duty. Its rated for a 350lb hunter. IT climbs good and once you are locked in, its really solid. I have lost the instructions for it but it folds down and has a shooting rest with it. I like it but its just to bulky for my hunting style. Any takers?

Weimcity, if you go to Phelps this year, approach it like this.
No matter which location you go, find a place that you would think "no one in their right mind would go there" and you will prob be right. Most hunters I see there during either gun season don't venture too far into the woods.

I usually walk about 2-3 miles into and away from the vehicles and rarely see anyone else. It's a hike but beats having others walk up on me!

I hunt up by the Managers House and do not see many hunters during the Archery seasons. Gun season obv. diff, but I still go there and walk far into the woods.

It would be great if a few of us could go one day and setup some ambushes I can put us on quite a few deer and surely one (if not more) of us would take one.

I had 21 deer pass me in 3 hours one day last year but never had a shot with my bow!

Cuz

I actually may have been in the area you indicated. I was about a mile out from the beaver pond south of the home when my unfortunate experience happened. This year I will not be out looking for game in Virginia.

This Commonwealth's attics with hunting and fishing is beyond comprehension to those who have not lived here since birth. No car tax means no car tax in the remaining 49 states but not here. Waterfowl hunting regulations are as complex and manipulative as I have ever faced. Sunday hunting ban but not for the licensed hunting preserves; talk about a living contradiction?

Oh well, enough of wishing. I have placed all my hunting and fishing equipment in mothballs until Virginia wakes up or I leave and get to hunt 24/7 during the hunting seasons.
Good luck with the future season and stay safe.

Awe man, I forgot I read what you posted on your hunting philosphy and hangin it all up.

I wish you would reconsider and hunt with me sometime this year. I always see deer but get few shots. My luck has got to change eventually...lol

I know not hunting Sunday sucks but I've learned to live with it since I do live here now. But hey, you do what you need to do and everything's gonna be OK!

That's how I see it

Yep, that is one thing that you have to ensure, is that you make a good shot. I got lucky,, my deer just fell over right where she stood!
Arrow went through her back and paralyzed her immediately. She couldn't stand up and expired in about 5 minutes.

I'll tell ya about a good spot in Phelps...gun or bow.

From Sumerduck on 651, turn left at the first possible parking lot on your left. (Past the power lines.)
Go down past a field on your left, to the first road on your right. (With a chain.)
Park there.
Walk down the road towards the manager's house and pond.
About a 1/4 mile down you'll see the road jog left then right, then straighten out and cross the pond.
At the windy part is where a major deer crossing is.
If you scout it, you'll find 4-5 trails on each side of the road coming up to a single crossing point.
At dusk sometimes a group will pop out and eat the grass there, because nobody down the road can see them.

Also, same gravel road, before the windy part, on the right side is a clearcut they put in a few years ago...about 1-2 acres in size. Between the clearing and the pond is a major funnel for deer. It's about 150 yards of trees, but still, a good deer funnel. To get from the woods on the rear of the clearing to the other side of the pond, they must cross that patch of woods. (And they usually cross at the deer crossing mentioned above.)

I've taken 3-4 deer down below the damn, in the creek bottom. That creek goes on down and turns into a swamp, andin gun season, if someone spooks them from the other side, they'll come up the creek to you.

Good luck.

Thanks for that tip! I haven't hunted that exact spot, but I have hunted at the end of the first field on the left,, a little before the chained road

As soon as I get that buck I saw Saturday in my other spot, I'll check that one out...

But I'll at least wait until after gun season cos I know a lot of people hunt around that area
