Yes, I'm so happy to not have to drive a country mile to get to my favorite German food.

I read about it this morning. I haven't been to the one in Madison in over 16 years. Which coincidentally is the last time I had decent German food that I didn't make myself. I'll definately give it a try when it opens here.

Don't get me wrong...I really hope they do well. I love German food, but I have a hard time justifying spending that much money for any one dish. Just my opinion.

I welcome them. For German food, I go to Zum Rheingarten. Not very often, mostly because it's a drive. Draco used to request that for his birthday dinner.
http://www.zumrheingarten.com/menus.html
If the food's worth the price, I can deal with it. Not weekly but once or twice a year. Don't know that that will keep them in business. But I'm happy that they're giving it a shot.
Quite honestly, I find I spend more time and money downtown simply because I've gotten to like the people and trust the outstanding quality of what they have to offer. I can deal with cutting corners elsewhere (i.e., spending less time and money at Walmart doing impulse/stocking up shopping) to have better quality, not stand in line for half an hour and have a relaxing stroll.
I waste five days a week dealing with massive amounts of people and standing on line just to get to work and home. Saturday and Sunday are all about Fredericksburg.

The hardest thing for them to deal with may be the apparent lack of skilled wait staff who actually know how to provide customer service.

Absolutely true. I have to deal with "Customer Service" departments most of my work day, and sometimes I'm appalled at the things I hear coming out of peoples mouths when they are paid representatives of companies.

I recently had a go round with Central Park Insurance's CP office, what a goober that guy was. I contacted him 4 times with unsatisfactory results. I finally called the Lafayette Blvd office to make the changes to my policy.

I've gone to the Madison location two or three times a year over the past ten years or so. As others have mentioned, it is quite pricey, and I would not go to the Fredericksburg location any more often. I liked Claiborne's, but only went there about three times total. I wonder if Fred can support a high-dollar eatery?

Old Towne Steak and Seafood seems to do alright, and that place is outragous. Not to mention you can get that sort of food anywhere.
We'll do the Bavarian Chef for sure, because the drive was the only thing that kept us away.

Personally, I think the hole customer service thing is tied directly into the impolite society we live in. Think about it...from the people that think it's okay to throw trash out the window, to cut other people off in traffic, to run red lights, etc. etc. Why should we expect good customer service.
There are eateries out there with good service. Those are the ones that get my repeat business and tips. The others can just wither on the vine.
Hopefully the Bavarian Chef will have good service.

Morton's always has good service.
This place looks good.
We were at Zum Rheingarten this past Friday and it was yummy.
I really don't think this place is too expensive for Fredericksburg. And if it is, Fredericksburg needs to step it up a bit.

Fantastic..
We need a good German restaurant in Old Town. Rheingarten is wonderful, but it is quite a haul. Fredericksburg has a ton of ecclectic upper end shops, so I don't believe price should be an issue. Bargain hunters always have IHOP and Denny's.

I don't know if I like German food or not. I look forward to trying it. But, judging from the long term consistent success and excellent reviews of the Madison restaurant, it's hard to imagine a Fredericksburg location not doing just as well.
It seems that parking was always something complained about with Claiborne's, so that may have potential to cause trouble.
The Trip Advisor reviews are almost unanimously positive.

Last time I looked at their menu, they didn't have the roulades, which is my favorite. It's a tenderized flank steak rolled around a mixture of bread based stuffing with bacon, apples, onions... and topped with a really nice sauce (some kind of glace').
The schnizels are a great choice too, which is staple german restaurant fare, and no doubt they'll have plenty of those.

We have the Capital Ale House or did everyone forget this? We need to start supporting business that opened first, not jump to the new toy just because its new. Too many people are copying other businesses and its a shame. I'll only go to the Ale House.

Folllowing this logic, no other business should ever open up.
Regardless, did you happen to see how long the Bavarian Chef has been in business? They are not exactly a new Toy - as you put it.

I don't care how long they have been in business the Ale house was here first. So what happens if more German themed places open? Do you expect them all to stay in business? No. People work hard to keep their business going so yes its upsetting to see something come into the city when they see someone else doing good. "Hey they are making money! Lets copy them!"

Business, in general, is survival of the fittest. If the Ale House has good food and service it shouldn't matter if a German themed restaurant set up shop right next door.

It's an inside joke... stick around and learn. - Nobody's perfect in these forums, but come on... For the life of me, I can't figure out how MORE business cause a place to become a ghost town. I was always under the impression that ghost towns were called ghost towns because businesses LEFT the town and took the residents with them.

You do realize that the Capital Ale House is NOT German themed... their claim to fame is a great variety of beers and decent pub fare.
Bavarian chef makes great German food, not pub fare but I guess you don't know the difference

If you only go to one business, you are missing out on a wealth of other places that are just as good.

Agreed. I got to Cap Ale most Mondays to get a burger and a few drinks (which is what they really make their money on). However, Cap Ale's German cuisine doesn't get near to holding a candle to Bavarian Chef's. It's worth the money, if I remember correctly the portions are huge along with the sides. I can't wait until they open.

Ate at the F'burg location for the first time. Who would have thought you needed reservations on an Tuesday evening at 6:30 (and they said it was slow). We were able to sit outside since it wasn't to hot out.
Food was up to par with the place in Madison. I will say the service was flat out B.A.D. I think that was more of a particular server though. I have had way to many good experiences at the original place, not to go back and give the Fredericksburg location another shot (or two).

Already planning on going back later this month. Love the one in Madison. The poor service I had was just from a poor server.
I did only tip 10% because of it. Of course, after I left, I realized that was still $17 and I probably should have done a lot less. Like I said, she was B.A.D.

I have reservations (made about a week ago) for the end of the month. Just called to add 2 more people and they can accomodate us, but said to call soon if we are going to add anymore, because they are filling up fast.

I was afraid they would assign the "B" team to the Fred. location, and it would suffer in comparison to the Rt. 29 Chef. Went to the Fred Chef in December. It is as good as the original. Same great food, same giant portions.

FINALLY made it over there for dinner. Service was average. Portions were gargantuan.
I thought the food, and I don't know how to sugar coat it, S U C K E D. Now before anyone gets to flaming me, not everything sucked but I had the dinner special, which was rouladen. I asked for no pickles in the stuffing but was told it was "premade".... ORLY?!?!? Okay so I went ahead with it anyway figuring I could always take them out if they didn't agree with me. Beef was quite tender but dry, and the stuffing was sadly flavorless. The sides were one of the things I remembered most about going to the one in Madison. My memories are now all I have. The German Potato Salad was as if it were prepared by an army cook. Which army I don't know. My GPS whoops it's ass on my worst day, and I have never seen eggs in GPS, and hate eggs to boot. Red cabbage was way too heavy on the cloves and food coloring. Green beans looked and smelled great but tasted a bit rank. Carrots were great and thanks be to God for that.... because none of the rest of the sides appealed to me.
As for the rest of our dinner party they seemed to enjoy it much more than I. Go figure the one with German blood is the one who hated it.
In the final analysis, for $200 I'm glad somebody else was paying tonight and they seemed to enjoy it, because I would've felt cheated.
