Hi,
I'm wondering if you can help me out with some info. I am a Stafford County resident and was driving on Rt. 20 today (something I don't usually do). I was stopped for speeding in the school zone in front of Locust Grove Middle School. The deputy was in front of the school with his radar gun. I am not somebody who normally speeds. In fact, a couple of miles before this I had people tailgating and passing me because I was driving the speed limit. I swear I never saw any flashing lights indicating reduced speed for a school zone. The "time of offense" on my ticket is 3:30 (although by my clock it was a few minutes later) and I noticed on the school web site that dismissal is 2:30. There were no cars, buses or any activity at the school when I drove past. Is anyone familiar with this area that they would know what time the school zone speed is in effect?
Thanks.

3:30 PM sounds a little late for me. Most of the kids elementary and middle school are usually walking down my street at 3:45 which is 6 miles from the school. I suggest calling VDOT in the Warrenton Office I think the Orange/Culpeper office is closed. They should know what times are set on the Flashers. Good Luck. By the way who gave you the ticket?

Locust Grove Elementary is right next door to the middle school. They get out about 3:30. There are always people pulled over in that area.

Thanks for the responses. As it turns out the day I was ticketed (March 4) was not a school day in Orange County. That is why I never saw any traffic, buses or children. There is a sign before you reach the school that states school zone when flashing. I did not see it flashing, but as of yet have not been able to obtain proof that it was not. Still deciding whether or not to fight the ticket...

If school is out then you are not required to follow those signs.

According to OCPS calendar, March 4 was a parent-teacher conference day with meetings to be held in the morning. So, technically the school was open that day but you did not see traffic in the afternoon because conferences took place earlier in the day. I'd be willing to wager if the judge is in a good mood he'll nix the ticket; that is if the 100 bucks/insurance hike is worth it to you.

A good question to ask would be if school was not in session, why was the copper running radar for the school sign?
